THE SOLEMN FORTY HOURS IN TARANTO
From midnight on the slopes of San Domenico, until the Easter of resurrection.
The Rites tarantini are a form of devotional single. The one that only the hearts of the brothers can offer.
The most important event of the year, from Holy Thursday to Holy Saturday, Taranto live moments of great emotion.
And the frenetic rhythms of everyday life give way to the slow pace of the Pardon.
The most solemn is that of the last Sunday of Lent, once known as Passion Sunday, along via Duomo, in the Old City to the church of San Domenico; in the evening the next Monday and it is held, always in the San Domenico, the Concert of the Passion in Taranto, performed by the Navy Band.
I Forgive that are members of the Church of the Carmine.
And represent the pivotal figures of the Holy Week in Taranto.
They proceeded slowly through the streets of the city with the rocking continuously said “nazzecata”.
Their name probably derives from the pilgrims who went to Rome to ask for the forgiveness of their sins. Proceed barefoot, wearing a white shirt, a white hood with two holes at the height of the eyes, a crown of twigs resting on the head; white gloves, a rosary, black hung at the waist with a medal of the sacred and a crucifix as well as a belt of black leather attached on the waist, representing the whip with which he was struck Jesus, and two scapulars bearing respectively the inscriptions embroidered “Decor” and “Carmeli”.
The Pardon also bear a stick about two meters, which symbolizes the old stick of the pilgrims.
The last pair of brothers that goes out from the Church of the Carmine is called “u serrachiese”, as it has the task to “tighten” the churches, that is, to close them for the night that is approaching.
Often pairs of brothers cross paths with others along the way. In these cases, it is “u salamelicche”, which is a kind of reverence: i forgive you take away the hat, and carry rosaries, and the important numismatic collections in against the chest.
All the forgive you need to fall in the Carmine by midnight on the Thursday, when, from the Church of San Domenico, the Procession of our Lady of Sorrows.
Tradition stipulates that the statue, at the exit from the church, is greeted with the execution of the Funeral March, “Tribute”, dedicated to the young musician of the band who died in a tragic accident on the job.
This procession concludes in the afternoon of good Friday at 17:00 in order to allow the start of the second procession, that of the Mysteries, which branches off from the Church of the Carmine, for you to again return only at 7:00 in the morning on the Saturday. To parade the city, in this case, are statues representing the passion of Jesus.
At the head of both the processions, there is always the troccolante, whose task is to close the rites tarantini Saturday morning: joint “dangling” in front of the Church of the Carmine, knocks three times with the tip of his stick, said “drone”, one of the sliding doors closed, in an atmosphere of quiet and deep feeling. This is one of the most significant moments and crowded of the whole procession.
To open the procession, the Troccolante, followed by the Banner, the Cross of the Mysteries, the statues of Christ in the garden, Christ at the Column, the Hecce Homo, the Waterfall, the Crucified, the Shroud of turin, the dead Jesus and our lady of Sorrows.

It is an event truly unique to the Easter Taranto: the inhabitants show their true face and give proof of courage, the respect of the traditions and sacrifice. Even the city seems to be trying to look more beautiful, and with its sea and its beauties, we seem to hear you whisper in the ear: “Christmas with yours, Easter in Taranto”.
